Tatiana Batova is an Associate Professor of Business Administration in the Communication area at Darden, where she teaches the Leadership Communication core course and the Storytelling with Data elective in the full-time MBA program. Prior to joining the Darden faculty, she was a tenured Associate Professor in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University, where she co-directed the MS in User Experience Degree with the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and served as a Senior Sustainability Scholar in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability.
Her research focuses on cross-cultural communication with applications to business, healthcare, and sustainability; data visualization; user and customer experience; social psychology; content strategy; and rhetoric of technology. Her articles appeared in leading business and professional communication journals such as the International Journal of Business Communication, the Journal of Business and Technical Communication, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, and Technical Communication. Alongside numerous academic conferences, she was invited to present her research at practitioner-oriented venues, for example, User Experience Professionals Association and Congility.
Outside of academia, Batova has worked extensively with international companies advising and managing projects related to multilingual communication and localization. Her clients ranged from General Electric, Garmin, and Volkswagen to Harley Davidson and Abbott Laboratories.
In addition to her vast research and international communication expertise, she brings to her teaching her dedication to active and student-centered learning. Having a deep commitment to cutting-edge pedagogy since her undergraduate education, she developed and taught courses ranging from middle school workshops to graduate and executive seminars and from experiential learning projects to case method and flipped-classroom format. A leader in interdisciplinary innovative curriculum design, she collaborates with scholars from other business-related fields to improve teaching practices. Her scholarship of teaching and learning appeared in Teaching Statistics, the Journal of Economics Teaching, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, and Technical Communication Quarterly.
Her research, teaching, and entrepreneurial activities have been recognized with awards and grants such as the Frank R. Smith Outstanding Journal Article Award from the Society for Technical Communication, the Distinguished Scholar Award from the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University, NSF I-Corps Grant, Center for Information Development-Management Grant (sponsored by Microsoft, EasyDITA, SDL, and Adobe), and several University of Wisconsin System teaching-focused grants.
She received her BA and MA from Tula State Pedagogical University in Russia and her MA and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
