Partnership for Leaders in Education

UVA-PLE - About

About UVA-PLE

 Mission, Vision, and Value Proposition

Our mission is to significantly raise educational outcomes at the student, school, and system levels. We build on the nationally leading capabilities of UVA's Darden School of Business and the School of Education and Human Development to strengthen and inspire lasting improvements in system and school leadership.

Our vision is to be the leading national organization for advancing leadership capacity and insights to help school system and school teams create transformational conditions in which previously underserved students achieve lasting success.

Failures in America’s education system are a major impediment to realizing a fair society in which all people can thrive. Transformational, cross-organizational leadership is critical to advance the educational system our students deserve. UVA-PLE is the only research-proven effort in the country focused on establishing system conditions ripe for change and building transformative leadership capacity to achieve that change.

UVA-PLE's transformative leadership development increases the capacity of system and school teams to heighten focus and collaboration, shape their own future, and drive measurable, lasting improvements in system effectiveness and student learning. Our partnerships accelerate data-informed, customized courses of action that aim to both address disparities in outcomes and advance more extraordinary learning for all students.

  • Organizational Beliefs

    Organizational Beliefs

    • Transformational leadership is a primary lever and a necessary component of any lasting K-12 system or school change.
    • Leadership is not based on title; K-12 system stakeholders at all levels underestimate their ability to inspire, empower, and mobilize critical change.
    • Effective system-level leaders facilitate efforts to address the root causes of system challenges and to create conditions in which schools can achieve remarkable, scalable and lasting improvements for all students.
    • Leaders are at their best when they are reflective and data-informed about what they need to do differently to achieve organizational and student-centered goals.
    • By coupling paradigm-shifting moves with a capacity-building approach tailored to local stakeholders’ needs, school systems can empower collective actions towards remarkable, lasting results in underserved environments.
    • By prioritizing and being responsive to the needs of underserved students, school systems can be at the forefront of addressing the disparities and complex challenges our communities face.
    • System-level change is most successful when informed by and in service to reality at individual schools while identifying opportunities to design and scale services that meet the needs of many schools.
    • Organizational change will be more successful when educational leaders compare their current practices to the research-proven system conditions that empower rapid and sustainable school improvement.
    • There is immense power in diverse stakeholders coming together to pursue a common purpose with shared ownership and mutual respect.
    • Student outcomes are the single most important measure of our partners and our success.
  • Core Competencies

    Core Competencies:
