The Darden School of Business and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) hosted the tenth CEIBS Private Wealth Investment Forum on 16 March 2019 in Shanghai. Through partnership with CEIBS, the conference expanded the Darden School’s annual Shanghai Investing Summit into its sixth consecutive year.

  • Darden-Invited Speaker Biographies

    Nicholas P. Sargen is an international economist turned global money manager.  He has been involved in international financial markets since the early 1970s, when he began his career at the U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.  He subsequently worked on Wall Street for 25 years, holding senior positions with Morgan Guaranty Trust (VP- International Economics Department), Salomon Brothers Inc. (Director of Bond Market Research), Prudential Insurance (CIO for Global Fixed Income Advisors) and J.P. Morgan Private Bank (Chief Investment Strategist).  In 2003, he became Chief Investment Officer for the Western & Southern Financial Group and its affiliate, Fort Washington Investment Advisors Inc., where he now serves as Chief Economist.   

    Sargen has written extensively on international financial markets, and he recently authored a book, Global Shocks: An Investment Guide for Turbulent Markets.  He appeared frequently on business television programs throughout his career on Wall Street, and was a regular panelist on Louis Rukeyser’s Wall Street Week.  He was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and received a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. and PhD in Economics from Stanford University.  He is also Visiting Executive Lecturer at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, and he has recently relocated to Keswick, Virginia.



    Joaquin Rodriguez Torres is a Managing Partner at Princeville Global, based in Hong Kong.  

    Prior to Princeville Global, Joaquin was a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank in Asia where he served in various leadership roles including Head of Technology, Media & Telecom.  Before moving to Asia in 2008, Joaquin spent almost a decade in Silicon Valley with Deutsche Bank and some time before that with Lehman Brothers.  Joaquin is an entrepreneur at heart, having founded three technology companies in Argentina before moving to the U.S. for business school.  

    Throughout his career, Joaquin has advised clients globally in more than 120 corporate finance transactions with an aggregate value of over $125 billion.  His clients have included technology leaders like Alibaba, Cisco Systems, Qunar, Renren, Tencent, Xiaomi, and many more as well as large private equity and sovereign wealth funds.  

    Outside of Princeville, Joaquin enjoys playing soccer and tennis as well as traveling back to Argentina and Spain where he spent his childhood.  He is also a frequent contributor to publications like the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal.  Joaquin has three daughters who live in Silicon Valley.  Joaquin holds a B.S. with honors from Universidad Catolica Argentina and an M.B.A. with honors from The University of Virginia Darden School of Business.  Joaquin speaks English, German, Portuguese and Spanish.



    Dr. Chun (Andrew) Xia is the Chief Research Officer of Noah Holdings Group (NYSE: NOAH) and the managing director of the research department, producing original and thought-provoking research in global macro , investment strategies and asset allocation (covering private and public equity, fixed income securities, currencies and real estates). Dr. Xia obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in Economics from the Peking University and his Ph.D. degree in Economics from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Noah in 2015, Dr. Xia was a professor of finance at the Faculty of Business and Economics, the University of Hong Kong, and his academic research was supported by the U.S. Science Foundation, China’s Natural Science Foundation and Hong Kong’s General Research Fund. Dr. Xia also won the 2001 AT&T Asia Pacific Young Leadership Award, the 2007 Best Teaching Award at the University of Minnesota, the 2015 Most Respectable Professor in Business at the University of Hong Kong, the 2015 Best Paper in Asian Capital Market Research by Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts jointly with CFA, among others. Dr. Xia provides economic opinions and wealth management advisory to new and traditional medias such as Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Bloomberg, Phoneix TV,RTHK, etc. He published a translated book High Return from Low Risk: A Remarkable Stock Market Paradox and his podcast ‘Behavioral Finance and Common Sense Investing’ on Ximalaya.com was one of the best-sellers in finance and investment podcasts  



    Fan Chen serves as Managing Director and Head of China Portfolio Management at Rayliant Global Advisors. He is responsible for investment management and strategy development in China.  

    Prior to joining Rayliant, Fan was an Investment Director at Ping An of China in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, heading research and investment activities of quantitative strategies for Ping An Securities. In this capacity, he developed and managed factor based cross asset strategies for Chinese domestic markets and was the lead Portfolio Manager of China’s 1st risk premium based global macro hedge fund strategy for global markets. Prior to Ping An, Fan was at PIMCO headquarter in Newport Beach, focusing on the trading and portfolio management for its flagship and biggest global macro hedge fund and conducting research for various quantitative strategies. Fan holds an MBA from Booth School of Business at University of Chicago and an MFE from Anderson School of Management at UCLA. He graduated from Wuhan University in China.



    Juan Jun (Josh) Sheng is Director of Intelligent Investment and Research at DataYes. He is also Chief Investment Officer of TSTH Asset Management, a subsidiary of DataYes. Mr. Sheng received an MBA degree from CEIBS and had extensive experience in multi-asset portfolio management with a focus on fixed income. Before joining DataYes, he worked for Everbright Securities and China International Capital Corporation.



    Dr. Fang (Frank) Yu is Professor of Finance at CEIBS. Dr. Yu received his Ph.D. degree in finance from the University of Chicago and was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota from 2005 to 2007. Prior to joining CEIBS, he was a quantitative research analyst with Barclays Global Investors from 2007 to 2009. 

    Dr. Yu’s main research interests focus on empirical corporate finance and behavioral finance. His publications have appeared in the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Consumer Research, and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making. He has won the 2013 CICF Best Paper Award, the 2013 TCFA Best Paper Award, the 2010 CEIBS Teaching Excellence Award, the 2014 and the 2018 CEIBS Research Excellence Award, and the Beijing News’ Young Economist Award. 

    He is currently teaching Corporate Finance for the CEIBS MBA programme and Investment for FMBA program. 



    Dr. Pedro Matos is the Academic Director of Richard A. Mayo Center for Asset Management, holds the John G. Macfarlane Family Chair in Business Administration and is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. 

    His research focuses on the growing importance of institutional investors in financial markets worldwide. His work has been published in top academic journals and featured in the press, including in The Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Fortune and Forbes. Matos is a Research Associate at the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), and his work has received numerous research grants and awards. 

    At Darden, Matos has published numerous case studies and has won the Wells Fargo Award for Excellence in Course Material Development (twice), the Wells Fargo Award for Outstanding Research Publication and the Darden Multiyear Publications Award. He previously taught at the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business where he received a Golden Apple teaching award. 

    Matos holds a B.A. in Economics from Nova University in Lisbon (Portugal) and a Ph.D. in Finance from INSEAD in Fontainebleau (France). Prior to his Ph.D., he worked with the Portuguese Ministry of Finance and consulted for the World Bank.
